About Cappadocia
Ten million years ago three volcanoes buried this part of central Anatolia in ash. Wind and water have been cutting it into shapes ever since — cones, ridges, spires and the tapering columns everyone calls fairy chimneys, some with a harder boulder still balanced on top like a hat.
People have been carving into that soft rock for at least four thousand years. Churches with Byzantine frescoes cut into cliff faces, whole monastic settlements hollowed out of a single outcrop, and underground cities dropping eight levels below the surface with ventilation shafts, stables and rolling stone doors — built to hide entire populations for months at a time.
Most visitors come for one image: dozens of balloons rising over the valleys at first light. It genuinely looks like that. But the ground-level Cappadocia — the Göreme rock churches, Uçhisar's castle honeycomb, the pottery workshops at Avanos, and a night in a room cut into the cliff — is what people actually talk about afterwards.

Göreme Open Air Museum

Uçhisar Castle
The highest point in Cappadocia — a single outcrop honeycombed with rooms and tunnels, hollowed out over centuries. Climb it for the widest view across the valleys to Mount Erciyes.
Paşabağ & Devrent Valley
The strangest rock in the region: multi-capped fairy chimneys standing in clusters at Paşabağ, then Devrent's eroded shapes that everyone reads as animals. Both on the Red Tour.
Derinkuyu Underground City

The balloon ride is an add-on
It is not included in any of our Cappadocia packages. Expect roughly €150–250 per person depending on season and basket size, paid separately. Tell us when you book and we will reserve it with a licensed operator — flights sell out weeks ahead in peak season.
Flights get cancelled
Balloons only fly in calm, clear conditions, and operators cancel on the morning if the wind is wrong. It happens often enough that you should plan for it: book the flight for your first morning so a cancellation still leaves a second chance. Cancelled flights are refunded by the operator.
Red Tour and Green Tour
Red covers the close-in sights — Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar, Love Valley, Zelve, Paşabağ, Devrent and lunch at Avanos. Green goes further afield to Derinkuyu, Ihlara Valley and Selime, with more walking. Two nights gets you both.
Cave hotels
Genuine rooms cut into the rock, not a theme. That means thick stone walls, arched ceilings, cool in summer and warm in winter, and sometimes fewer windows than a normal room. Bathrooms and heating are modern. Our packages use properties such as Empire Cave Cappadocia.
It gets cold before dawn
Cappadocia sits at around 1,000 m on the Anatolian plateau, so mornings are cold even in summer — single figures at balloon launch time in spring and autumn. Bring a proper jacket regardless of season, and gloves between November and March.
How much walking
More than people expect. Ihlara Valley involves a long descent and climb on uneven steps, and the underground city means stooping through narrow low passages. Tell us in advance about mobility limits or claustrophobia and we will adjust the day rather than leave anyone waiting in the van.
Halal food & prayer
Meat in local restaurants is halal as standard, and Göreme, Ürgüp and Avanos all have mosques within walking distance of the hotels. Lunch stops on both tours are at local restaurants rather than resort buffets.
Getting there
Cappadocia has two airports — Kayseri and Nevşehir — both roughly a 90-minute flight from Istanbul, then 45 minutes to an hour by road to the hotels. Our multi-city packages include the domestic flight and both transfers.

Cappadocia FAQs
Is the hot air balloon ride included?
No. It is an optional add-on on every Cappadocia package, at roughly €150–250 per person depending on season and basket size. We are explicit about this because it is the single most common misunderstanding — tell us when you book and we will arrange it with a licensed operator alongside your tour.
What happens if the balloon flight is cancelled?
Operators cancel on the morning when wind or visibility is unsafe, and it is not unusual. The operator refunds a cancelled flight. Our advice is to book it for your first morning in Cappadocia, so if it is called off you still have another day to fly.
How many days do I need in Cappadocia?
Two nights covers both the Red and Green tours and gives you two chances at a balloon flight. Three is more comfortable and leaves room for a valley walk or a sunset viewpoint. One night means choosing one tour and gambling your only balloon morning.
What is the difference between the Red and Green tours?
Red stays close to Göreme — the Open Air Museum, Uçhisar Castle, Love Valley, Zelve, Paşabağ and Devrent, with lunch at Avanos. Green travels further south to Derinkuyu Underground City, Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery, and involves considerably more walking.
Are cave hotels actually comfortable?
Yes. They are real rooms carved into the rock with modern bathrooms, heating and proper beds — the stone keeps them cool in summer and warm in winter. The trade-off is that some rooms have small windows or none, so say if you need natural light and we will request accordingly.
Is the underground city difficult if I am claustrophobic?
It can be. The connecting passages are narrow and low enough that you stoop, and it is a long way back to the entrance once you are deep in. Tell your guide before you go down — there are shorter routes, and skipping it entirely is perfectly normal.
When is the best time to visit?
April to June and September to November give the most reliable balloon flying conditions and the most comfortable walking weather. Winter is beautiful under snow and far quieter, but more flights are cancelled. July and August fly well but the midday heat is hard work.
Can I combine Cappadocia with Istanbul?
It is our most popular route. The domestic flight takes about 90 minutes, and most travellers pair three or four nights in Istanbul with two or three here. We also run longer itineraries adding Antalya, Pamukkale or Trabzon.
