    Day 2

Ateshgah, Yanar Dağ & the Vintage Car Museum

After breakfast, drive roughly 30 km out to Surakhany for Ateshgah, the Zoroastrian fire temple built around a natural gas vent — your guide covers both the history of the site and the phenomenon behind it. Continue the short distance to Yanar Dağ, the "Burning Mountain", where natural gas has burned along the hillside since antiquity and gives Azerbaijan its Land of Fire name. Back in the city, stop for photographs at the Heydar Aliyev Centre, Zaha Hadid's 619,000 sq ft building whose roof folds down into the landscape as one continuous surface, then go inside the Vintage Car Museum alongside it. Overnight in Baku.

    Day 3

Baku City & Old City Tour

After breakfast, a full day across the capital. Begin at the Carpet Museum — built in the shape of a rolled rug — for Azerbaijani weaving from the historic techniques through to modern work. Step next door to Little Venice, a small canal park on the seafront where you can ride a gondola if you like. Lunch at a local restaurant, then Baku Boulevard along the Caspian before entering İçərişəhər, the walled old city, for the Maiden Tower and the lanes around it. Finish the evening on Nizami Street, the pedestrian avenue lined with boutiques and cafés, and dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Baku.

    Day 4

    Gobustan, Mud Volcanoes & Shopping

After breakfast, head out to Gobustan, southwest of Baku. Start at the museum, where Mesolithic bones and tools set up what you are about to see, then walk the open-air site itself — over 6,000 petroglyphs cut into the rock across some 40,000 years, showing hunting scenes, dances, animals and boats. Twenty minutes on lies the mud volcano field: Azerbaijan holds close to half the world's mud volcanoes, and unlike the ordinary kind these erupt cold mud and gas rather than lava, so you can stand right beside them. Return to the city for a shopping stop at Ganjlik Mall, one of Baku's largest, with 80-plus stores, a cinema and food courts. Overnight in Baku.
